Spring Exterior Assessments and Drying Readiness

Exterior painting season starts with the condition of the surface, not just the calendar. After a wet winter, siding, trim, and other exterior materials need to be assessed for moisture, wear, failed caulking, and areas that need repair before coatings are applied. In the Fraser Valley and Lower Mainland, humidity, recent rainfall, shade, and substrate condition can all affect when a project is ready to move forward.

What Can Affect Your Exterior Painting Timeline

– Moisture in siding, trim, or other exterior surfaces
– Active cracking, gaps, or failed sealant
– Rain or storms in the forecast
– High humidity that slows drying and cure time
– Areas that need more scraping, sanding, caulking, or repair than expected

Frequently Asked Questions

What time of year is best to paint the outside of my house?

Our exterior season runs from May through early October, and when the weather cooperates it can start in April and stretch into November. At the edges of the season we watch moisture and temperature closely, because exterior paint needs the right conditions to dry and cure properly.

Can you paint the exterior in cold or rainy weather?

Only when conditions are right. We need overnight temperatures of at least 2°C, and we use moisture meters on the surfaces before we paint. If it rains mid-project we pause or move to covered areas like the underside of a deck, so we can stand behind the finish with our warranty.

How do you prepare my home's exterior before painting?

We start with a low-pressure soft wash on siding, stucco and the body of the house, using a cleaning solution rather than high pressure so no water is forced into your home. Loose and peeling paint is scraped back to a sound surface, bare wood is primed with an exterior-rated primer, and cracked caulking is repaired before any topcoats go on.

What if my siding or trim has rotten wood?

We have a carpenter who comes in ahead of the painters to handle wood repairs. Painting over rot only hides the problem, so any damaged boards are dealt with first and the new wood is primed before it is painted.

How often should a house exterior be repainted?

Most homes need a full exterior repaint every 7 to 10 years, depending on sun and weather exposure. Keeping your caulking touched up between repaints is the best way to keep water out and make the paint job last, and decks need a maintenance coat every 1 to 2 years.
